James 3:9-12, NIV
“9 With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse human beings, who have been made in God’s likeness. 10 Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this should not be. 11 Can both fresh water and salt water flow from the same spring? 12 My brothers and sisters, can a fig tree bear olives, or a grapevine bear figs? Neither can a salt spring produce fresh water.”
As we are starting a new year there is no doubt that there are many people who are relieved that 2020 has come to an end. There are a lot of hopeful thoughts about what this New Year will bring, but the reality is that there is not one of us who can control anything about what will happen. Today, I want to remind all of us that there is something that we do have the ability to control and what we decide to do with it can have a truly unbelievable impact. I am talking today about the words that we speak.
Each time we face a situation we can determine the way we will react. The clearest way that we can express this is through our words. The words that we choose to speak to a person or about a situation have power. In fact, more power than most believe. When we speak life giving words and speak positive things about the circumstances we are facing, not only does it serve to change the people who hear the things that we say, but it also serves to encourage us as well. But all too often, when faced with difficult circumstances or individuals, we instead choose to allow our emotions to take control and lead the things that we speak. When we speak negative things about people or about the situations that we face, not only does it negatively affect those around us, but it can also bring our own emotions down as well.
It is amazing sometimes when we see people go through the same circumstances and yet, have completely different reactions. The words that people speak about the situations that they face can tell us a great deal about where their heart truly is. The Word of God tells us that we are to use our words to praise Him and to be a source of fresh water to those who are around us. As we move into this New Year we must begin to make a decision, how are we going to use our words this year? Are we going to speak words of life or are we going to speak words of death?
