What A Man Says

Matthew 9:17, New International Version
“Neither do people pour new wine into old wineskins. If they do, the skins will burst; the wine will run out and the wineskins will be ruined. No, they pour new wine into new wineskins, and both are preserved.”

If there is one thing about life that we can always be certain of, it is that there will always be change. Each and every day, and in fact, each moment can bring something new and unexpected. As change happens, our lives also change. I can remember having a conversation with my grandmother a few years before she went home to be with the Lord in which she told me how every single member of her family when she grew up was now gone, and the family she had now were all different people. Over the course of her life everything and everyone changed.

I believe that on one hand we know that the Lord is the same yesterday, today, and forever and yet, we also know that the world is constantly changing. How then can we be prepared to reach the ever changing world with the timeless and unchanging truth of Jesus Christ? I believe that one of the keys is that we have to be willing to change ourselves and allow the Holy Spirit to lead and guide us in the moment that we are in. I have found over and over in my walk with Christ that what He was leading me to do yesterday, may not be what He wants me to do today. He may reveal new methods, new approaches, and even new opportunities that require a totally new and unique approach. If I try to continue to make things happen the way that they did yesterday, I may completely miss out on what He wants from me today.

My wife and I recently had dinner with another couple and during the course of the conversation my friend made a statement that really struck me. He said that so often the greatest roadblock to the movement of God today, is the movement of God yesterday. Now, he did not mean that God was unable to move, but what he did mean was that so often Christians see God do something and they automatically adopt that movement as a process. They want to repeat the steps and believe that if they do step one, then step two, and then step three then it will work. But, because they are so adamant about following the steps, they completely miss out on the new miracles that Jesus is looking to perform now.

What then do we do with this? My word for you today is this, cling to the never changing Holy Spirit and listen to His voice. Do not cling to the past and what worked yesterday. Sometimes God will reveal new things to us and lead us to do things differently than we are used to or what worked in the past. And when He does this, we must be ready and willing to raise our hand and say “Yes Lord!”
