What A Man Says
Do you have a desire for your life to bear fruit? This should be a pretty simple question for most believers to answer. Of course we desire that our lives bear fruit! I believe that everyone who lives has a deep longing for their lives to have purpose and to have eternal impact. We each want to know that our lives have meaning and purpose. When we see fruit being produced through our lives and from the actions and efforts we make, it gives us hope that we truly are making a difference with our lives. But how can we be sure that the fruit we are producing will truly have eternal significance?
We cannot only look at the amount or appearance of the fruit that is coming from our efforts, we must also consider the source and the type of fruit that is being produced. I remember being young and being out in the forest one day with my dad. I saw a bush that had these very good looking red berries. I thought that they had to be very yummy and had picked a few and was about to eat them. When my dad saw me, he immediately stopped me and had me throw the berries on the ground. He said that those particular berries were very bad for me and would make me feel very sick and probably even cause me to go to the hospital or worse. How could something that looked so good and fresh actually be that bad for me?
When we think about this in the context of our walk with the Lord, we have to first ensure that the starting point is always Christ. The Word says that we must remain in Him. When we remain in Him, not only will we bear much fruit, but we can be sure that the fruit that is produced will be wonderful, satisfying, and filled with every good thing. It will be fruit that is not only consumed by the receiver, it will go on to produce more fruit. This is the fruit that brings fulfillment to our lives because it is not produced by us alone; it is produced by the work of the Holy Spirit in our lives.
Today, as you reflect on your life, do you see evidence that your life is producing good fruit? If so, what kind of fruit do you see being produced? Remember, not all fruit is life producing; in fact, some fruit can bring death. The key is if the fruit comes from Christ or not.
