What A Man Says

Author: Christopher Brock Philippians 1:27, New International Version “Whatever happens, conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ. Then, whether I come and see you or only hear about you in my absence, I will know that you stand firm in the one Spirit, striving together as one for the faith of the gospel.” |
Whatever happens. That is a pretty broad category. In fact, I believe that it would include every possible scenario and circumstance. There is no if, ands, or buts about what would be included. As we go through life on this earth there are no shortages of drama. We are always facing difficult situations and sometimes, those situations can make us want to react in some very specific ways. We may want to act out of emotion and say or do something that we know is not representative of the character of Christ.
This week’s scripture says that no matter what happens, we are to conduct ourselves in a way that is worthy of the gospel of Christ. In otherward, no matter what someone else does to us or what the situation may be, we are to behave in a way that Jesus would approve of. We are to behave the same way that Jesus would. This is something that sounds noble and in the moment we may say yes and commit ourselves to it, but once we are faced with the trials it can become much harder to live out.
So what are we to do? How can we conduct ourselves in a way that is worthy of Jesus when we are still living in a world that is filled with sin? The reality is, this is a difficult thing to do. In fact, if we try to do it on our own and use our own strength and will power, it is impossible. We will fail over and over again. But there is a way. When Jesus ascended into heaven He did not leave us alone. He sent the Holy Spirit to be with us and to help us as we go through our lives on this earth. When we allow the Holy Spirit to work in and through our lives and we begin to rely upon Him to be our strength and helper, we will find that we can do things that we could have never done on our own.
If you are reading this today and you are in a situation which is difficult and you are being tempted to do or say something that you know you should not, ask the Holy Spirit to give you the strength to do what is right. Ask the Lord to fill you so that you can conduct yourself in a manner which is worthy of Jesus Christ. And, if you are reading this and you know you have failed in this and you have not acted in a way that glorified Christ, now is the time to repent. Come to Him, admit what you have done, and ask Him to forgive you. He will be faithful to not only forgive you, but strengthen you to continue on fighting the good fight.
