Genesis 2: 23-24, King James Version
“And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man. Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.”
My husband and I aren't always perfect, in fact it feels like we blow it more often than we get it right. But when we are able to work together as one, boy does it feel amazing. For the past few weeks my husband has been working extra hard, coming home each night after a long exhausting day at work just to keep working more hours on our home replacing our deck. It was beginning to burn him out, and try as I might I wasn’t able to be much of a help other than by keeping the little kids out of his way. In times past, we used to work on these kinds of projects together, enjoying the journey of remodeling our home together. It was a really sweet time for us to feel close and connected, completing home projects together. But now with so many little children under foot, I am not a part of the projects as much as I used to be.
Our bigger children are a great help, removing the old deck boards and what not; but it’s just not the same as being able to work together as husband and wife. So when he asked me very timidly the other morning, trying not to add another thing to my already overwhelming day, if I would be able to pressure wash the old deck frame, I was eager to be able to bless him! My day quickly got away from me as one unexpected task after another encroached upon my efforts to bless my husband. Finally, laying all other things aside, I set my face to the task. Of course it wasn’t anywhere near easy, as I had not used this massive piece of machinery in quite some time. I ended up hurting myself twice and even had to call him and look up a video on YouTube just to get started, but after it was up and running and I was getting drenched in the spray of it all I felt like super women! It had been so very long since I was able to do something like this for my husband, and even though it nearly took everything out of me, I found myself being invigorated again by just knowing how much it would bless him.
Now though there wasn’t as much fanfare as maybe I would have liked when he came home, he was certainly grateful. Over the next few days our whole family helped him push through and finish the project. We christened the deck by sleeping out on it under the stars, and can you believe it, unbeknownst to us there was a meteor shower that night. What a sweet reward given to us by our heavenly Father after all of our hard work! The good Lord even blessed us with a lovely patio set the next day that was half off because it was the end of the season!
Now there have been many times in our recent past where my husband has had to rescue me by changing a diaper, or polishing off dinner, or bathing the babies. It is a beautiful thing when we work together willingly in our households towards the same goal. May your household be blessed and refreshed by service one toward another, and may your hearts be knit together in unity for the glory of God our Father.
