Keepers of The Home
What wisdom and good counsel we find in the Holy Bible. Proverbs 17:9 (KJV) says, “He that covereth a transgression seeketh love; but he that repeateth a matter separateth very friends.”
This portion of scripture advises us to forgive when we have been wronged, rather than bringing up the offense over and over again. As a wife, how do you do when you become offended at the behavior of your husband? Do you tend to bring it back up to him over and over again, or do you practice “covering” his transgression”?
By no means am I condoning abusive action or language from your husband and suggesting that you should continue to tolerate such misbehavior as a spouse. There is a time when abusive actions and language need exposed for accountability if the behavior is persistent. I know however, that all too often we women can “tear down the walls of our own house” (Proverbs 14:1) by picking needless fights with our spouse. Forgiveness and grace takes effort in any marriage and regular practice.
Awhile back I wrote an article and shared about a time when the Holy Spirit enabled me to cover an offense I had been harboring towards my husband. I simply could not figure out how to do such a thing when every fiber of my being was wanting to pick a fight. The good Lord showed me that the first step was obedience to His word. When my body language was stiff and obstinate towards my husband with no desire to forgive, I reached out my hand to embrace his. Immediately the emotions of forgiveness and reconciliation flooded me.
Will you allow yourself to be a conduit of God’s loving grace towards your spouse? Love begets more love and we learn over and over again in God’s Word that love never fails (1 Corinthians 13:8), we only need to act on God’s promises to yield His results.
Marriage is a beautiful gift from God, with wonderful seasons and not so wonderful seasons. The beauty of marriage comes from the forgiveness and growth we gain in remaining with each other during the tough times. May God richly bless you as you seek Him, and show Himself faithful on your behalf as you act on His Word.
