I remember sitting around one of my close friend’s kitchen tables about two years ago. There were three of us there and we eagerly gathered to dig into the word and come together communing with one another to learn and grow in the Lord. I vividly remember us diving into Romans 8. The whole chapter pierced my soul. I can remember the life that the word gave me in showing me who I am as well as whose I am. As we poured ourselves out over the scripture and we shed tears over our walks and we prayed to be strengthened and spurred on in Christ it was vividly clear to me that my life would never be the same.
I mean when you read the life giving word such as in Romans 8, you are shown what your life in Christ is meant to be. Let’s just go there for a minute.
“But you are not controlled by your sinful nature. You are controlled by the Spirit if you have the Spirit of God living in you. (And remember that those who do not have the Spirit of Christ living in them do not belong to him at all.) And Christ lives within you, so even though your body will die because of sin, the Spirit gives you life because you have been made right with God. The Spirit of God, who raised Jesus from the dead, lives in you. And just as God raised Christ Jesus from the dead, he will give life to your mortal bodies by this same Spirit living within you.” (Romans 8:9-11 NLT)
I sit in awe that the same spirit of God who raised Jesus from the dead lives in me. I mean repeat that to yourself. It’s just truly an awestruck feeling that a Savior gave His life for me and for you and then also poured out His spirit to equip us with a power that no evil can stand against. This was really the start of my journey and it happened in a simple dining room surrounded with a couple close friends where we got real. We got vulnerable. And we chose death to our old lives to truly start walking in who He wanted us to be.
My testimony is ever changing. It is not the same last week as it is today and by the time you read this I pray that He grows it even more. But one thing I know, my Father in heaven took my sinful broken, idolatrous, vain, jealous, insecure heart and has been restoring me piece by piece ever since. He took my marriage that had been broken over and over again by our worldly ways and He has shown us His original intention for marriage and has been tenderly restoring and building it upon a foundation of Jesus. He sent us a Helper who I cling to every day of my life and who allows me to mess up but helps me to find His way.
More than anything He lit a fire deep down in my soul. He took little insecure me and He placed a boldness and a burning heart in this world to walk in as I make my way to Him in this life.
May He make a change in anyone reading this as well. May He show you that nothing is impossible and no one is too far gone from Him.
