Growing In Faith
The coronavirus, the quarantine order and being socially responsible in our communities may have closed the doors of our church buildings, but this new reality has in no way closed the church. When the word “church” comes up in conversation, the first thing we think of is a building. We have this mindset that church is a place we go to on Sundays. As we get our family dressed, fight through traffic and get a good seat, it’s easy to lose sight of the fact that we aren’t just going to church; we are the church. In the Bible, church is always a reference to people, not a place. The church is a body of believers that live out the gospel in their words and actions. The church is at its best when people inside the building take Jesus’ message outside the building and serve those they meet. In 1 Timothy 5, Paul describes the church as people dedicated to doing whatever it takes to reach out and help others.
So, can you worship God outside the church walls? Yes, because worship is simply expressing your love to God. That means you can worship in the shower. You can worship in your backyard mowing the lawn. You can worship washing dishes. You can worship when you’re driving to work or going grocery shopping or walking on the golf course. You can express your love to God anywhere and everywhere. And that means you can sing anywhere and everywhere. God is omnipresent (meaning He is everywhere). He can interact with us however and wherever He chooses, He doesn't necessarily need a church building to do so. He just wants us to come to Him with a pure and surrendered heart. It's not about religion. It's not about a building. It's not about the best instruments, singers or sound equipment. It’s about a love relationship—a relationship with God, who loves you so much that He sent His Son to die for you and who wants you to love Him back. God doesn't care where you are, if you are giving Him your true praise and worship, He is delighting in that.
Personally, I don't need any specific place to be with God. I can love, obey, worship and express gratitude and awe anywhere at any time. God hears even a single whispered prayer, because, well, He is God. My prayer is: "Lord, prepare me to be a sanctuary and use me anywhere and everywhere I go."
