Growing In Faith
Last week at work I was informed that one of our usual customers had passed away. She was an elderly lady, eighty-nine years old. There was just a small section of the paper that mentioned it and it didn’t even include a picture. It got me thinking about what kind of life she lived....was she married? Did she have kids? What was her profession? Then I started thinking about a very small part of a tombstone that has great significance.....the dash. That small line between the birth date and death date. That dash represents the time in between....essentially that person’s life.
God wants you to live an abundant prosperous life. He wants you to fulfill your God-given purpose, to walk out the dreams He has placed in your heart.
Many people have a distorted view of what living in abundance and prosperity really mean. These days it's about material things: a big house, a new car, designer clothes, and a large bank account. Having an abundant life isn't about material things, it's so much more than that. It's about the daily blessings of God and living our life according to His will. When we have the Lord's blessings we are truly rich and living in abundance. Proverbs 10:22 (ESV) says, "The blessings of the Lord makes one rich, and He adds no sorrow with it."
To live this blessed, abundant life you must have the right attitude and beliefs. God outlined the basics of this philosophy to Joshua when He said, “This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, so that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success” (Joshua 1:8, ESV)
God’s heart for you is expressed in 3 John 2. It says, “Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health, just as your soul prospers.” (ESV) You see, God wants you to succeed in life. He wants you to prosper in your family, in your mind, your relationships, your body, your health, and in your finances. He wants you to prosper in all things.
Know this: if your soul does not prosper, you will not have prosperity in the other areas of your life, either. Your soul needs to prosper and that cannot happen without an intimate relationship to God and His Word.
God’s plan for our success begins with the words we speak. That’s why Joshua 1:8 starts out by saying “this Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth…” Just like Joshua, we need to realize that success and abundance only come as we speak words that line up with God’s Word.....and not only speak God's Word, but live it. In other words, success, prosperity and the abundant life are by-products of a life built on the wisdom found in God’s Word.
What a great life you will have as you spend time developing your relationship with the Lord, letting His Word settle deep into your heart so that it influences every aspect of your life!
Abundant life is not about what we have. It’s not about what we get. It’s not about what we claim. Ultimately, abundant life is about what we receive as a gift from the Lord and to live knowing we are stewards of the blessings of God.
At the end of the day, perhaps this is how we know we have an abundant life—when we have shared our life with others. When we have enough of the blessings of God (mercy, peace, love, grace, wisdom, etc.) to share with others and then actually do it; that’s when we truly have abundant life.
