Growing in Faith
The word kindle relates to igniting and feeding a fire. It is the kindling that brings a blaze forth and keeps it burning by producing energy and action. Kindling can also provoke and rouse to action. Kindling causes a reaction and produces an effect.
Before we were born again, our spirit was dead and empty. When we believed in Christ, He, as the life-giving Spirit, came to be with us and live in our spirit. Our regenerated human spirit was ignited with the fire of the Spirit of God. This is a gift, and we must fan and kindle it into a flame and keep it burning.
So, how do we kindle our fire for the Lord? When we kindle our spirits with God's Word, the Holy Spirit ignites fresh life into the gift He has placed within us. Fresh.....freshness is found in the Holy Spirit and is the result of allowing Him to work in us. Freshness helps dissipate weariness, providing energy to move forward as well as stirring the fire that the Lord has placed within us.
The apostle Paul uses this flame analogy in 2 Timothy 1:6 (NLT): "This is why I remind you to fan into flames the spiritual gift God gave you..." Since we have this gift of God in us, why do we need to fan it into flame? Yes, our spirit was ignited by the divine fire of the Holy Spirit, but, after we are saved, our zeal for the Lord may fade over time. We are not as burning hot as when we first received the Lord. However, when we aren't burning, our spirit is still a "glowing ember" … we simply need to fan our spirit to give it more "oxygen" until it's burning again. Just as a fire needs oxygen to burn, for us to be burning in spirit, we need the oxygen of the Holy Spirit. By opening our mouth to pray, sing, or call on the Lord's Name, we inhale the Spirit as divine oxygen.
The Lord wants us to be burning hot in our love for Him and in our service to Him. This is why we need to fan our spirit into a flame and kindle the fire the Lord has put in us. Let us all practice fanning into flame the gift of God in us every day so we can be burning in spirit!
