Do you ever think about why Paul reminds the believers of “Fixing our eyes on Jesus”? Could it be because he knows the story of Peter sinking when he did not fix his eyes on Jesus while walking on the water (Matthew 14:22-23)? Or maybe because he knows very well about how the devil comes to steal, kill, and destroy, and the area the evil one wants to accomplish this most in is in the relationship we have with Jesus? Let’s read what Paul wrote in Hebrews 12:1 (NIV) “…let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.” Now, my dear friends, ask yourselves what may cause you to take your eyes off Jesus? The fear of the storms in your life? Or the work the devil in your areas of weakness?
There is no shame in admitting we have weaknesses. We should admit them and ask the Lord to help us just as the Lord instructs Paul, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." (2 Corinthians 12:9a, NIV) Our God is greater, greater than anyone in this world, including the devil or any man, and He is in you (1 John 4:4). If He is in you then He is also your assurance, assurance that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate you from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. Instead, in all these things, you are more than conquerors through Him who loved you. (Romans 8:37-39)
We should know that the enemy cannot destroy the relationship we have with God. But what he can do is try to redirect our focus or distract us to turn to another way. When this happens, we will become the one to terminate our relationship with Jesus, just like the prodigal son walked away from his father (Luke 15). The Bible warns us of this in 1 John 2:15 (NIV), “Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in them.”
Our Father and our Lord Jesus will never stop loving us, not a single weapon from the evil one can stop His love for us. However, we can be changed, quickly just like shifting shadows. That’s why we need to fix our eyes and our focus on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of our faith. When we do this, we can know that the same joy that was set before Him is also set before us. We can endured the cross before us because our Master is carrying it with us and know that no shame can come to those at the right hand of the throne of God.
My dear brothers and sisters, stand firm! “Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes.” (Ephesians 6:11, NIV)
