1 Samuel 17:46, New International Version
“This day the LORD will deliver you into my hands, and I’ll strike you down and cut off your head. This very day I will give the carcasses of the Philistine army to the birds and the wild animals, and the whole world will know that there is a God in Israel."
When you read how David defeated Goliath in 1 Samuel, on what do you focus . . . the faith David had in God, the mocking of him by his brothers, or how he defeated the enemy of the Israelites with one single stone? All of these things speak lessons that we can learn from, but do not miss the most important part of this passage which says, “. . . the whole world will know that there is a God in Israel.” The whole world will know, not just one single corner or just the land of Israel.
In that time, there was no motorized transportation nor the communication technology of this century. However, David proclaimed that the whole world would know there is a God in Israel. There is a God Who is full of power, full of wisdom, and Who is without limit! Time or space cannot limit Him – His name will be lifted high, it will be established over all nations! (Psalm 46:10) Was David exaggerating about the Lord?
When the Lord said, “Look at the nations and watch— and be utterly amazed. For I am going to do something in your days that you would not believe, even if you were told.” (Habakkuk 1:5, NIV) What does this Word tell us? Be utterly amazed! He is going to do something, something that is going to be great, something that is going to be wild, something that is going to be amazing! Even if He told you what He was going to do, you would not believe Him! So, what was He talking about? A virgin conceived a baby boy from the Spirit of God, and the Son of God became man and dwelt among us. He perfectly demonstrated the love of God – which is grace and mercy and forgiveness. All the sins of sinners will be forgiven through the redemption that came from the Son, Jesus Christ, the Messiah.
Look at all the nations and watch: there are many who are proclaiming the name of Jesus, bringing His gospel, denying themselves, and taking up their cross to follow Him, yet still many do not believe even though they have been told! Wake up! No matter where you live, what age you are, what culture you grew up in, or what your circumstances are … none of these can be a reason to stop you from knowing the name of Jesus and what He has done for you! There is no more time for us to worry about everything which is temporary in this world. God has been calling for so long, and now the wakeup call has become stronger than ever before. We are in the same battlefield that David was in, and Goliath is yelling and blaspheming the name of the One true God. What will you do? Will you be like the brothers of David and King Saul, or will you choose to be like David and stand up with faith and courage?
If you are my brothers and sisters in Christ, be a warrior of Christ and put on the full armor of God. It’s “for such a time as this”!
