Being Fruitful
Jesus answered Thomas, “I am the way and the truth and the life.” Thomas had asked, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?” What did Jesus mean and what does He want His disciples to do with this information?
Let’s read the entire passage in John 14:1-7 (NIV):
“’Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. You know the way to the place where I am going.’
Thomas said to him, ‘Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?’
Jesus answered, ‘I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you really know me, you will know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him.’”
Jesus was telling His disciples that He, as the bridegroom, will come back to take His bride, the church, to the wedding of the Lamb. He was using the example of the Jewish wedding to show how He would fulfill His promises. Just like any Jewish bridegroom, after he pays the dowry for his future bride (Jesus paid the cost for us – His bride), he will go back to his father’s house and build a new living space. Once that is completed, he will go back to pick up his bride and take her to their wedding banquet. In this passage, He was describing how He would take His bride to go and live in the father’s house. Jesus is the Bridegroom and He is the Way that prepares us to go to the Father and live with Him forever. This is the offer Jesus has given us.
Now, what should we do with His offer? We should accept His words and store up His commands within us. (Proverbs 2:1) We must hold to His teaching, be His disciples, and know the truth. (John 8:31-32) The truth is the Word, and the Word is Jesus. (John 15:17, John 1:1, Genesis 1:1, Colossians 1:16) The truth shows us the Way, and the Way brings us to an everlasting life. Jesus is the Way, the Truth, and the Life and He has gone to the Father; in fact, He is with the Father now. Do you know Him, do you accept Him, and are you ready to be His bride? It is only through Him that you can come to the Father’s house to live in His palace for eternity.
